Need to compare your new SAT score to an old SAT score?Visit Collegeboard.org to use the SAT Score Converter App to convert your new SAT score to an old SAT score.
Why would I need to convert my score?
Most students entering college as Freshman in the 2016-2017 school year took the old SAT. Therefore, college reports that include the average SAT scores of admitted students will likely reflect old SAT scores. Students who are applying to colleges for the 2017-2018 school year will need to convert their scores to compare them to the averages listed by each college.

What is a "good" score on the SAT?
Students are considered college- and career-ready when their SAT section scores meet both the Math and the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing benchmarks. A total score of 1010, with a ERW score of 480 and Math score of 530 meets college- and career-ready benchmarks. (It is important to note that college readiness is a continuum — students scoring below the SAT benchmarks can still be successful in college, especially with additional preparation and perseverance.)
Score reports use colors to show how students’ section scores relate to the SAT or grade-level benchmark.
Score reports use colors to show how students’ section scores relate to the SAT or grade-level benchmark.
- Green: The section score meets or exceeds the benchmark.
- Yellow: The section score is within one year’s academic growth of the benchmark.
- Red: The section score is below the benchmark by more than one year’s academic growth.
To determine what makes for good SAT scores relative to everyone else, it’s important to understand how SAT scoring works. Your total score out of 1600 (as well as your two sections subscores out of 800) corresponds to a percentile ranking. Your percentile tells you what percent of students you scored better than. So if you got a 60th-percentile score, you’ve scored better than 60% of all test-takers!
The 50th-percentile SAT composite score—the average SAT score—is 1080 (roughly- 540 ERW + 540 Math).

Good SAT scores for YOUR goals
Not sure how you measure up? Check out the SAT score ranges for the schools on your wishlist, and see how your scores compare. Visit the website of your college of choice and research the "Admissions" page. Colleges often report the middle 50% range of test scores for entering first-year students. Do your scores fall in the lower end, or even below, the school's average range? That school may be a long shot (though still possible with some SAT prep!). Do your scores fall well within the school's average range? That college or university could be a match!
